Qualities of Black Moonstone
This entry was posted on March 28, 2014.
Black Moonstone is a gorgeous silky smooth stone with a velvety silver flash which plays across its surface when moved about in the light. Its color ranges from a dark slate grey to lighter shades of grey and sometimes reflects a red undertone. This dark color of Moonstone is a very unusual find; coming to us from Madagascar.
The name Moonstone is derived from this visual effect, or sheen, caused by light diffraction within its crystalline structure. Moonstone is composed of two feldspar species, Orthoclase and Albite. The two species are intermingled during formation. As the newly formed mineral cools, the intergrowth of Orthoclase and Albite separates into stacked, alternating layers. When light falls between these thin, flat layers, it scatters in many directions producing the phenomenon called “Adularescence” or “Chatoyancy”.
Moonstone has been used in jewelry for centuries, including ancient civilizations. The Romans admired moonstone, as they believed it was born from solidified rays of the moon. Both the Romans and Greeks associated Moonstone with their lunar gods and goddesses.
Black Moonstone from Madagascar is also an unusual find for its size! Multi-color and Rainbow Moonstones are usually gravel sized in the raw, suitable only for Jewelry pieces. When we found this Black Moonstone in small boulders we were shocked and excited by the size; we were going to be able to carve large pieces of Moonstone for the first time!
When it comes to Black Moonstone, it is very rare to find any intricately detailed carvings such as the ones that we offer. Most often, it will be found in smoothed over free-forms or in tumbled stones. Moonstone naturally sheers along a horizontal plane, making it very difficult to carve with detail. This is why Black Moonstone Crystal Skulls and Goddesses from Soul2Shine are so special and unique!
Exclusive to Soul2Shine are these incredible standing Moonstone Celtic Goddesses, embellished with the Tree of Life and the 3 major phases of the Moon. When I first heard of Black Moonstone, my very first thought was to carve this lovely goddess figure; it is simply the perfect stone for Mother Earth! Eric cautioned me that the stone might not hold up to my expectations when it came to carving, and in a way he was right. We were only able to produce a very limited number of these gorgeous goddesses. Much of the material simply would not yield such intricacies.
More shapes of Moonstone you won’t find anywhere else? Rock Stars, Tumble Stones, Crystal Skulls, Stone carved Goddess Beads and our classic Mother Earth Goddess. Unfortunately, this is all of the Black Moonstone we will likely ever carve. No longer is it possible for us to find these large pieces. The source has been depleted.

Very chatoyant and flashy, the effect when moved around under any light source is almost hypnotic; the silver flash dances under the light and about the stone like captured moonlight! It is certainly a favorite!
